rebel-angels.jpg

Aaarr, I be tagged by th’ saucy wench alejna , begad!

  1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages)
  2. Open the book to page 123
  3. Find the 5th sentence
  4. Post the next three sentences
  5. Tag 5 people

The nearest book is here on my bedside table - The Rebel Angels by Robertson Davies, which I am presently rereading. I happen to be on page 124 at the moment so I just read this bit last night before falling asleep with the lamp on and the book in my hands. Okay here goes. . .

Poshrat!‘ she screamed again, and spat in my face. This was a scene we had played many times in our life together, my Mother and I, and I knew better than to try to wipe away the spittle. It was something that had to be endured, and in the end it would probably work out as I wished.

The Rebel Angels is book one of The Cornish Trilogy . An excellent read.

And now, at the risk of alejna making me walk th’ plank aaarr, rather than tagging 5 people I’ll make this a self-tagging ‘me-me’.

Let us know what’s on your page 123! f_bigeyes.gif

have you ever …?

checklist.jpg

A checklist of things done in one’s life.

The instructions are to bold the “done” things (I’ve done 72 out of 150). I’ve also italicized things that I haven’t done yet but would like to. Tag yourself if you like and let us know where to find your answers. :)

yet another book thang!

surrounded-by-books.jpg

Found over at Lori’s booknook book_icon.gif

And many thanks to alejna for coining the term me-me, because I cringe everytime I read that trendy blogosphere bastardization of the word meme. But me-me is not only clever, it actually says what these thangs are all about, which is “all about me”.

Instructions…

Bold what you have read, italicize your DNFs, strikethrough the ones you hated, put *asterisks next to those you’ve read more than once, and put a + cross in front of the books that are on your bookshelf.

It’s another self-tagging me-me … but do let us know where to find your answers. f_ok.gif

book thang

bookshelf.jpg

Swiped from Archie.

  • Hardback or paperback?
I don’t mind really. Paperbacks are easier to carry around but hardbacks look and feel nicer.
  • Amazon or brick and mortar?
I love wandering around bookshops but here in Sevilla there is a very limited selection of books in English, so Amazon is quite useful.
  • Barnes & Noble or Borders?
  • Bookmark or dog-ear?
Bookmark. Though I sometimes dog-ear pages I want to go back to and I only ever dog-ear paperbacks.
  • Alphabetize by author, alphabetize by title or random?
Alphabetized by author in two sections - fiction and nonfiction.
  • Keep, throw away, or sell?
    Keep!
  • Keep dust jacket or toss it?
    Keep it.
  • Read with dust jacket or remove it?
I read with the dust jacket removed, otherwise it gets all ripped.
  • Short story or novel?
    Novels, usually.
  • Collection (by same author) or anthology (by different authors)?
It depends, but once I find an author I like I tend to buy everything they’ve ever written.
  • Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
Harry Potter (have no idea what the other one is).
  • Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
I usually stop reading when I doze off, which can even happen in the middle of a sentence.
  • ‘It was a dark and stormy night’ or ‘Once upon a time’?
    Either, depending on my mood.
  • Buy or Borrow?
    Buy.
  • New or used?
There aren’t any good used-bookshops in Sevilla.
  • Buying choice: book reviews, recommendation or browse?
    Usually browsing and personal recommendations.
  • Tidy ending or cliffhanger?
I like a proper satisfying ending - I always feel cheated when a story just fizzles out. Cliffhangers only work in a series.
  • Morning reading, afternoon reading or nighttime reading?
Anytime, though I usually tend to read at night.
  • Standalone or series?
    Both.
  • Favourite series?
Discword (Terry Pratchett), Falco (Lindsay Davis), Harry Potter (what’s-her-name) and various trilogies, especially Robertson Davies.
