it was 20 years ago …

mystic_pizza.jpg

. . . that I first saw this film.

A very charming ‘coming of age’ film about three teenaged girls (played by Julia Roberts, Annabeth Gish & Lili Taylor) in the small town of Mystic, Connecticut. And I had vague memories of really loving this film a lot.

Got to watch it again yesterday as it was being shown on tv on Sunday afternoon . . . and I loved it all over again.

But something really niggled. which I know is one of my pet niggles . . . and that is about how women portrayed in films twenty years ago actually got away with having real women’s bodies. I mean, okay, Mystic Pizza was a small indie low-budget film and not a big-time Hollywood film, otherwise this may not have been the case. But man, there was ole Julia (I think it was her first film role) showing a lot of big sexy butt and voluptuous curves, and Annabeth and Lily also looked like … well, like normal women do when wearing trousers. Like, no three inch gap between their thighs. And all scenes showing any of them in a sleeveless top or dress also showed quite attractive and normal looking upper arms, not pencil-thin sticks protruding out of bony shoulders… it was really refreshing to see this for a change.

Well, refreshing and also sad to think of how things are now. Ah well…

An excellent film - does anyone else remember it?

backing up …

back-up-stress.jpg

. . . in order to move forward.

But gaaaaaa! it’s awful! And yes I know, I know!!! that it’s all my fault for not doing computer backups on a more regular basis. But unlike with cleaning cat ears it seriously is not one of those things where the anticipation is worse than the reality (au contraire). The reality of backing up stuff totally sucks, especially when there is so much to catch up on. I hearby vow to do weekly backups if once I get finished with this lot.

How often do you back up your computer files?

black bastard?

Had to start a new category for this - guess which one.

Why on Earth would anyone use this name for anything at all, let alone an energy drink? Any bets on how long they stay in business without a name change?

Over at the Black Bastard Website you can contact them by email and complain, since this choice of brand name seems to be intentionally racist and not simply an example of a cross cultural marketing blunder.

Wandering further around the blogosphere today I also came across this BBC article about an unfortunate name choice for a restaurant in Mumbai.

computer rage!!!

computer-rage.jpg

Gaaaaaaaaa!!!

For three goddamm fucking days I’ve been trying to work out a way to transfer large files (mostly films and music) from my old desktop PC - aka the Jaguar - to Sexy Beast.

First I tried setting up a home network between the two of them… six hours and two bottles of wine later I was close to a nervous breakdown. Decided to toss that idea and get a USB memory stick … easy peasy, right? Just copy the stuff from Jag and copy that onto SB. Except … some of those things were films that I also wanted to copy onto dvd so I could watch them on the television via the dvd player, rather than on the computer.

But it seems there was no way no fucking day was this going to happen. Either SB doesn’t have a dvd burner (could this be possible?) or I totally messed up how to copy stuff. In any case, it’s been three goddamm days of this and I’m about ready to throw all the computers off the balcony!

What am I doing wrong??? f_headhurts.gif

oh, the irony …

Click if you dare.

Is that not totally hideous? And ironically or otherwise, I found it earlier today when I came across this blog, which is supposedly all about “Fashion, Lifestyle, and Humor for the Plus-Sized Woman”.

Ya think?

socks & sandals … why???

ohdear.jpg   Is there ever a good excuse? I rather don’t think so.

In keeping with this Freudian foot fetish thang I apparently have . . . recently on an h2g2 thread someone asked why socks and sandals were considered unstylish. And I decided the only possible rebuttal was to provide photo evidence. And here it is . . .

Sandals & Socks
