Does anyone here use netvibes?
I came across it this morning whilst checking my blog stat page … I saw that one of today’s ‘referrers’ came from netvibes.com and I wondered what it could be. So being a curious cat I clicked on the link … and then ended up spending an hour or so making myself a very pretty netvibes page!
Except I’m not really sure what it’s good for, you know? I mean, as it can be accessed from anywhere, it seems great if you often travel or don’t have your own computer as you can organise all your links and RSS feeds there. But so far it looks like an online personal agenda. Is that really all it is? Am I missing something?
Waits for to show up …

Okay, I’ll fess up, I’m the one who comes from Netvibes. I’ve got a tab of blog feeds there, so I come from there if I come to your blog itself.
It’s fun — and useful. I can access it from anywhere, and all of my links are on it, news feeds, my gmail accounts…I can’t access my gmail at work, but I can see Netvibes, so I can at least see if anyone’s written. 🙂

Aha! So it’s YOU who owes me about an hour and a half of my life! 😉
I actually think it’s kinda cool, but I can’t really see that I’d need to use it much at home. Though I do like the ‘to do list’ and the notes.
Never thought of making a tab of blog feeds… but as I’m already using Bloglines, wouldn’t that be redundant?
Well, if for nothing else, it’s nice having this pretty online agenda. Apparently Times Magazine rated it as one of the 50 best websites in 2007. How do they know that when it’s only July?

Hm. It looks like a good idea, but I can just see it turning into another time waster for me…As if Facebook isn’t enough!

I find I mostly use Farcebook these days to play scrabble with Lori. People can’t actually contact you on Netvibes, can they? I thought it was just a groovy kind of organiser.
I just installed the fishtank widget – coolisimo! 🙂

Never come across netvibes before but, at first glance, it looks a bit like protopage.

Hi Polonius. Yeah, I’ve seen those protopages before – I think Edward has one. Looks very similar (except my Netvibes page is way cuter 😉 ).
I wonder – is it safe to have your email linked to on those places?

Aha – this Wikipedia entry tells me a bit more. I was wondering what the “universes” were all about, but I’m still not sure how you set them up. Dang you, Lori! 🙂

Okay, now I’m wondering if I should switch all my blog subscriptions over to Netvibes. The feedreader I’m presently using is Bloglines, which (usually) works fine, but it’s getting a bit ‘cluttered’. With Netvibes it looks like I can organise the blogs I read into groups and make them much more manageable.
Hmmm . . .

Wow! I’ve got it all just about set up now and it’s fabulous. I have all my blogs categorized now and I’ve even managed to get comment feeds for Blogger friends (yay!) so I don’t have to always trawl through their blogs to see if anyone has commented there.
And I can read all the blog posts and comments there quite happily. I mean, Bloglines is just so ugly and ‘industrial blue’ looking. Much nicer to read all the blog feeds on my very attractive (have I mentioned how pretty it is? 🙂 ) pale orange Netvibes page.
Oh, and I’ve changed the daily ‘selection of comics’ for daily Calvin & Hobbes – much better.
Thanks, Lori! 🙂

I’m glad you like it! The tab feature (tabs within tabs if you’re using tabbed browsing already!) is great, letting you organize your feeds…
And I find it does save time — I don’t have to check all my email accounts if I can see at a glance that no-one’s written, and I only visit the blogs that have updates, and …

Does Netvibes crash easily? I can’t use bloglines very well, as it’s about as tough on my PC as wordpress and livejournal are — 1 post at a time, and maybe a reply and then it’s time to reboot…makes it hard to keep enthusiastic about blogging. 😕

You can but try, SC.
One anomaly I’ve noticed when reading the comments is that the Blogger ones don’t show the post title, so you can’t always be sure which post they are replies for. But at least I can get the Blogger comments on Netvibes, which is something I couldn’t do with Bloglines (though perhaps I was doing something wrong there).
The WordPress comments have the post titles.
The only thing I miss from Bloglines is the little notifier thingy. In fact, unless I click on them, the feed tabs I’ve made on Netvibes don’t show if there are any new posts or comments.

To get comments feeds from Blogger just paste the default URL in again and replace ‘posts’ with ‘comments’.
Oh, and I was wrong about the feed tabs not showing new stuff – they do.
I think this is going to be a very handy home page. 🙂

On the question of email addresses (I’ve been away a couple of days) I’d be wary of posting them on any page that can be read by a bot without a password.

Good point, Polonius. Hmmm…
Mind you, I’ve got the same email address stuck up on all my blogs and so far no problem. It’s kind of a ‘throw away’ account anyhow that I only use for internet stuff so if it suddenly gets overrun by spam I’ll just start a different one.
Or were you talking about bots other than spamming ones?
I guess I was more concerned about the fact that in order to get your email updates you have to give your actual email password to Netvibes.

Oh, and I put a linked thumbnail pic of my Netvibes page up there. It’s still under construction and I know a lot of stuff I have on there seems redundant – but only if I’m using my computer at home. The idea is to set it up as a ‘find everything’ page for when I’m not on my own computer.
But it also makes an excellent homepage as most of the things I check regularly are all there. Kind of like one-stop shopping.

I’ve also discovered that the fish in my fish tank widget actually follow the cursor around and if I click on it it leaves some ‘fish food’ which all the fish go for…
Yes, I am quite easily amused! 🙂
