So remember back when I HATED this place, but after the scaffolding was taken down I found myself quite liking “The Setas“? Well, the other day they finally opened the Mirador on top and Nog & I went up to have a look. Amazing. I was captivated as much by the cool curvy architecture as with the panoramic views of the city. I was also scared out of my wits at one point when, despite the barrier, there was suddenly just a sheer drop in front of me and seriously wide open spaces. Not the best situation for an agoraphobe like me. So I snapped a few quick shots of that particular view – in which I could actually see my rooftop terrace, including Loki sitting in the upstairs window! – and made it back to the “safety” of curvy structure around me.
I’m also amazed to discover that the Metropol Parasol (to give its proper name) is becoming one of my favourite places in town. The market is wonderful, as is the little bar inside that makes up super-fresh and super-cheap grilled or fried fish, and I’m looking forward to the other tapas bars and restaurants opening soon, including the one on top in the Mirador. If you’d told me this six months ago I’d have said you were nuts.
So, what do you think?

In the best tradition of Catalan modernism. Gaudi would have applauded.

I can understand the cautious reaction – but I think I quite like it as well.

It’s certainly eye-catching and quite spectacular but I’d have to see it and experience it in the flesh, so to speak, in order to be sure what I really make of it, I think!!! I wouldn’t like to be confronted with a sudden sheer drop in front of me, either, with no barrier … surely that is an oversight that will be rectified in short order?!

Oh no, there is a barrier – and quite a good one – all around the mirador walkway. I meant that, despite the barrier, at one point it felt like I was just hanging out there in mid-air. It’s weird because I don’t have a fear of heights exactly, but wide open spaces from high up when the space I’m standing in is also very open, scare the hell outta me. I also get vertigo looking up at tall things, but not when looking down from them.
It’s not easy being me! 😉

There’s that lookout at the Grand Canyon which is simply a glass platform hanging over the canyon… There used to be a glass floor in the observation floor at the World Trade Centre. Not in a billion years, for a billion dollars, or with a gun held to my head….

For a billion dollars I’d tranq myself up and stand anywhere. Easy but not cheap, that’s me. 🙂

I still think it looks like packing material.

I’m not crazy about heights so I wouldn’t be up there. Mom told me that when they visited Chartres Cathedral when she was a girl, and they climbed up to the roof, she almost fell through a space where a chunk of stone had been removed for repair and not blocked off! Talk about “a bit of a drop”!. One of my many reasons for being afraid of heights.

I think it looks really cool! It’s so curvy and twisty. Are those mirrors along the right side, in the upper right photo?
I actually love heights, so I’d be all over it. (But probably still happy to have the barriers.)

No, not mirrors. Those are the windows of the restaurant – cool, eh?
